The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has initiated pilot testing of 5G networks in Bhopal Smart City, GMR International Airport New Delhi, Deendayal Port Kandla and Namma Metro Bangalore on the use of street furniture for small cells and aerial fibre deployment.

Telecom service providers including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea Limited and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) are participating in these pilot tests at different locations.

According to TRAI, these pilot tests will be helpful to make cross-sectoral infrastructure more accessible for the quick rollout of 5G networks for telcos.

Further, TRAI suggested that small cells can play a pivotal role in network upgradation and expansion in India’s 5G rollout, as high-frequency signals from large macro towers will have to be complemented by a large number of small cells for densification.
