The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has amended the mobile number portability (MNP) rules in an effort to make the entire process faster and simpler. The new rules will come into effect from December 16, 2019.

As per the terms of current rules, telecom operators and MNP service providers are required to process the port out requests of their subscribers within four working days if it’s in the same circle.

However, as part of the revisions introduced, TRAI has prescribed a three working days timeline for port out requests within a service area. Meanwhile, a timeline of five working days has been prescribed for requests for port out from one circle to another.

The MNP request under the present rule will be processed till December 9, 2019 and the service will remain unavailable between December 10, 2019 and December 15, 2019 as entities involved in the process will be migrating their systems to implement new rules.

In addition, the validity of the unique porting code (UPC) has also been brought down to four days instead of a fortnight as prescribed earlier. This is applicable for all circles except Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East, where the validity of 30 days for the UPC code will remain unchanged.
