The combined debt of the four major telecom operators in India reached Rs 4.10 trillion in the financial year 2023-24 (FY24), with state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) having the lowest debt burden at Rs 232.97 billion.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development said that Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) carried a debt of Rs 2.07 trillion, Bharti Airtel Rs 1.25 trillion, and Jio Infocomm Rs 527.40 billion as of March 31, 2024.

BSNL’s debt, which stood at Rs 404 billion in FY22, was brought down to Rs 280.92 billion with assistance from a revival package and financial support from the government. The minister further noted that the government has approved a 4G/5G spectrum allocation to BSNL, involving an investment of approximately Rs 890 billion.
