
The Manufacturers? Association for Information Technology (MAIT) has published the Industry Performance Review report for the financial year 2012-13. The report findings are based on a survey conducted by the market research firm IMRB.
According to the report the total PC sales between April 2012 and March 2013, (including desktop computers, notebooks and netbooks) stood at 11.31million registering a growth of five per cent over the last financial year. The sales of desktops stood at 6.77 million units in 2012-13 witnessing a growth of one per cent over the corresponding period lat year. Tablets are cannibalising the PC market and the country is witnessing an exponential increase in the demand for tablets with the segment registering a growth of 424 per cent for the second consecutive year. Further, internet penetration in 22 cities across the country stood 65 per cent amongst commercial users and at 35 per cent of among households.
Commenting on the industry performance, J V Ramamurthy, president, MAIT, said, ?The year 2012-13 has been the year for Tablet PC with consumers preferring tablet over PC. The combination of basic functioning of a PC coupled with affordable price is driving the growth of Tablet PC. The industry is hopeful that the overall PC sales for 2013-14 will reach around 12.11 million units, registering a modest growth of 8 per cent.?
