
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the telecom subscriber base in India increased from 892.02 million at the end of February 2013 to 898.02 million at the end of March, 2013 registering a growth of 0.67 per cent.
The share of urban subscribers has increased from 61.08 per cent in February 2013 to 61.11 per cent in March 2013. Meanwhile, the share of rural subscribers has declined from 38.92 per cent to 38.89 per cent during the same period. As per TRAI, overall teledensity increased from 72.90 per cent in February 2013 to 73.32 in March 2013.
The country’s total wireless subscriber base increased from 861.66 million in February 2013 to 867.80 million at the end of March 2013, registering a monthly growth of 0.71 per cent. The share of urban wireless subscribers has increased from 60.50 per cent to 60.53 per cent. However, the share of rural wireless subscribers has declined from 39.50 per cent in the month of February 2013 to 39.47 per cent in March 2013. The overall wireless teledensity in India reached 70.85 for the period under review.
As of March 2013, private operators hold 87.76 per cent of the wireless market, while Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited together hold 12.24 per cent market share.
