According to the Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI), the telecom space is currently facing penalties worth Rs 65 billion on various counts, say news reports.
The industry body has estimated that issues pertaining to mobile radiation levels account for Rs 19 billion of the overall penalty amount. Of this, 1.2 per cent of the penalty is for infringement of norms while 64 per cent is owing to late submission of certificates.
To tackle this situation, AUSPI has requested the secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), to examine whether the penalties can be rationalised. AUSPI has also suggested establishing an appeal mechanism at DoT.
