The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a tariff order reducing roaming charges by up to 56 per cent.

Applicable to all mobile operators for both prepaid and post-paid services, TRAI has ruled that no rental will be permitted for roaming in any form. Also, no separate public switched telephone network (PSTN) charges will be applicable. Under the new ceilings, the maximum permissible charge for outgoing national long distance (NLD) calls while roaming will be Rs 2.40 per minute while the minimum permissible charge for outgoing local calls will be Rs 1.40. Incoming calls will be charged at Rs 1.75.

Outgoing SMSs while roaming will continue to be in forbearance.

The new charges will be effective from February 15.
