According to international market research firm GfK, globally, the demand for smartphones is expected to grow over 10 per cent year-on-year in 2015 as compared to the growth rate of 23 per cent in 2014.

Further, within the smartphone segment, there will be higher demand for 4G handsets. The research firm underlines that for the first time, the share of 4G handsets surpassed 50 per cent of the total global smartphone in the first quarter of 2015.  Globally, the 4G handset market growth was led by China with its share of 4G devices in the total handset market in the first quarter of 2015 standing at 73 per cent.

GfK states that countries such as India and Indonesia will also witness encouraging demand for 4G handsets. For example, the sale of 4G handsets in India is expected to increase to 7 per cent of the total smartphone sales in 2015. Going forward, the growth of smartphone sales in India and Indonesia is expected to be driven by an expanding 4G network.
