According to GSMA, global machine-to-machine (M2M) connections will reach 250 million in 2014 year from 195 million in 2013.
The M2M market, growing at about 40 per cent per year at a compound annual growth rate of 38 per cent between 2010 and 2013, accounted for 2.8 per cent of all global mobile connections at the end of 2013. At present, about 428 mobile operators offer M2M services across 187 countries. Operators are now undertaking real commercial M2M deployments, indicating that the market has moved from an early-stage to mass-market delivery phase. A large number of operators are adapting their organisational structures and business models to serve a range of vertical industries with M2M solutions.
GSMA says that the automotive industry is one of the fastest-growing M2M markets. Consumers have access to in-car connectivity and services such as flexible usage based pay-as-you-drive insurance and real-time traffic management.
