The MTN Group, Africa’s largest mobile network operator, has failed to negotiate a deal to buy Egypt’s Orascom Telecom Holding’s assets on account of regulatory hurdles. In April 2010, MTN had confirmed the talks aimed at buying control of Orascom or some of its businesses. However, after the Government of Algeria stated that it would not allow MTN to buy Orascom’s local Djezzy unit, which has the largest share of the Algerian mobile market and is also Orascom’s single biggest source of revenue, MTN decided to call off the deal.
