According to Juniper Research, over 950 million wireless customers worldwide are expected to use their handsets for mobile ticketing by 2018.
The growth in mobile ticketing would be driven by sectors like transport, live entertainment events and cinema ticketing. The research firm adds that the mobile handset has been a key ticketing delivery channel in metros across Scandinavian countries and deployments are increasing in Europe and the US as well.
Juniper Networks points out that in the short-term, the outlook for ticketing supported by near field communication technology (NFC) is not too encouraging. Lack of implementation standards is proving to be a key barrier to interoperability. The industry’s inability to achieve transaction speed targets has further affected the widespread adoption of mobile ticketing.
