As per data released by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), of the total telephone connection base of 914.60 million, the private sector holds 86 per cent (786 million telephone connections) as of October 2011.

DoT added that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) held 14.08 per cent of the total telephone base.

Further, DoT said that the sector has witnessed considerable growth over the past two years, with an overall subscriber base of 914.60 million and a teledensity of 76.03 per cent.

With urban teledensity reaching 166.54 per cent, 40 per cent rural teledensity is expected by end-2014.

Further, as on November 30, 2011, 19 million mobile customers have successfully ported their mobile numbers to service providers of their choice.
