According to enterprise mobility solutions firm Xcube Labs, the exponential growth of smartphone customers in India will facilitate growth in the country?s mobile applications market.

The firm forecasts that the number of smartphone users will reach 400 million by 2016 and expects this growth to eventually lead to development of a more robust mobile application market in the country. The mobile application market in India will be driven by encouraging adoption of smartphones, availability of local content and bandwidth.

In addition, increasing uptake of global mobile applications will also contribute to the development of a strong mobile application ecosystem in India.

With the increasing adoption of 3 G and 4 G, Xcube Labs sees a significant opportunity for customers to initially use popular utility and entertainment applications such as WhatsApp, Angry Birds etc, and then move on to use entertainment-led and local content.  The initial investments on mobile applications in India will be on the large media and entertainment segment and once that reaches critical mass, more content from smaller players is expected to be generated.

However, the biggest challenge before application developers is to devise measures to encourage increasing usage of applications and develop more relevant applications for users.
