Bharti airtel and Reliance Communications (RCM) have asked the government to focus on broadband services. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Group CEO and managing director, Bharti airtel said, “We are at the cusp of moving from voice communications to broadband communications. Broadband holds the key for the rural and urban markets and must be given due recognition, at par with road, electricity and water infrastructure for the benefit of our industry.?

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), internet and broadband penetration in the country has remained low, mainly due to a decline in wireline telephone connectivity and non availability of broadband technologies.

As of May 2011, the number of broadband users stood at 12.12 million. Going forward, 3G services are expected to boost broadband usage.
