The government is reportedly exploring the option of creating teleT com infrastructure in the rural areas to increase rural teledensity from its current low level of 1 per cent. The government may be willing to share this infrastructure with service providers who want to cater to the rural market. This infrastructure-sharing arrangement is an effort to encourage investment in economically less viable areas. After Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) expressed reservations about sharing its infrastructure, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) considered building such infrastructure itself. It will allow service providers to use this for a nominal charge.
