The government expects to raise Rs 296.48 billion through recurring licence fees and other usage charges from the telecom sector, according to the general budget for 2011-12 tabled by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, according to news reports.

The usage charges include licence fees from the telecom operators, receipts on account of spectrum usage charges and auction of 3G and broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum.

As per the last budget, the government estimated accruals worth Rs 497.99 billion by auctioning spectrum for 3G and BWA access services. But it ended up raking in Rs 1.08 trillion through these auctions in 2010-11.

While the revenue from the auction of 3G spectrum stood at Rs 650 billion, as against the expected Rs 350 billion, the BWA spectrum fetched the government over Rs 380 billion.
