In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communications and IT said that there was no proposal to formulate a mechanism to regulate content on the internet.

Pilot said, ?The Government does not regulate content and there is no proposal to formulate any mechanism to regulate the same.?

He also said that between April 2010 and November 2011, 57 incidents of the misuse of social networking sites in terms of publishing objectionable content were reported to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).

Further, Pilot said that the Government has notified the Information Technology (Intermediaries Guidelines) Rules, 2011, under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. These rules provide for intermediaries to observe due diligence and safeguards.
