According to Strategy Analytics, the global cellular baseband processor market stood at $5.8 billion in the first quarter of 2015.

Qualcomm led the cellular baseband processor market with a revenue share of 61 per cent followed by MediaTek and Spreadtrum in second and third position with revenue share of 18 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively.

The research firm underlines that Spreadtrum overtook MediaTek to capture the number two spot in the global 3G baseband market in the first quarter of 2015, partly as a result of Qualcomm and MediaTek shifting their focus from 3G to 4G.

Further, Samsung LSI overtook Qualcomm?s Snapdragon 810 processor in Samsung Mobile?s Galaxy S6 smartphones and moved up to number three spot in the long term evolution (LTE) baseband shipments. Meanwhile, Qualcomm?s LTE unit share declined and stood at 68 per cent in the quarter under review as a result of increased competition and the replacement of its processors in the Samsung?s Galaxy S6 smartphones.
