According to a recent report by Strategy Analytics, the global 5G smartphone shipments increased from 24 million units in Q1 2020 to 133.9 million units in Q1 2021, recording a YoY growth of 458 per cent.

As per the report, one of the key contributing factors to this growth has been the rapid adoption of the technology in China which is powering demand for 5G smartphones. Apple, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi are believed to have benefitted the most as the demand exploded in China.

The global 5G smartphone market was led by Apple that shipped around 40.4 million 5G iPhones worldwide in Q1 2021, capturing 30 per cent share in the 5G smartphone global market during the quarter.

The report noted that Samsung held a 13 per cent market share in 5G smartphone shipments globally in Q1 2021. Samsung’s 5G smartphones shipment increased from 8.3 million in Q1 2020 to 17 million in Q1 2021.

Meanwhile, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi captured 16 per cent, 14 per cent and 12 per cent market share, respectively, in the in 5G smartphone shipments globally during the period under consideration.
