The Essar Group is likely to merge its telecom licence in Uganda with the operations of Dhabi Group’s Warid Telecom. The group intends to buy a majority stake in Warid Telecom Uganda for about $190 million. Warid, owned by the UAE-based Dhabi Group, launched GSM wireless services in February 2008 and now has a subscriber base of around 1.7 million.
