Texas Instruments (TI) has launched its single-chip mobile solution in India. This solution is expected to bring down power and space consumption by 50 per cent and cut costs by 30 per cent.
Designed and developed at TI’s Bangalore development centre, manufacturers such as Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson are expected to launch handsets based on the single-chip solution in nine months. The solution will also help in bringing down handset costs to Rs 1,000, which will expectedly boost cellular penetration and help achieve the target of 250 million phones by December 2007. TI also announced the first cellphones built entirely in India, from concept and design to production. Based on TI’s TCS chipset family, the GSM/GPRS handsets have been developed by Indian companies BPL and Quasar for British firm Primus.
