According to the Indian Space Association (ISpA), terrestrial communication systems such as mobile services will continue to dominate for at least the next ten years, even as satellite communication (satcom) begins to emerge. Satcom, while promising connectivity in remote regions, remains expensive at present due to the high expenses involved in launching and maintaining satellites, which typically need servicing or replacement every five years.
ISpA noted that companies like Starlink must consider affordable pricing models tailored to the Indian market, which is highly price-sensitive compared to other global regions. Without lower tariffs, the government may need to step in with subsidies to extend satcom services to underserved areas.
Currently, Starlink is not operational in India, but the company is expected to receive spectrum for trial services in the coming days. Moreover, Starlink is prepared to make significant moves to establish a presence.
