Telstra International reportedly plans to begin providing long distance, virtual private networks and enterprise services in India from March 2012, say news reports.

The company had secured national long distance, international long distance and Internet services licences on October 11, 2011, from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). These licences are expected to help it service existing international clients that have operations in India.

Telstra will compete with other global majors, AT&T, British Telecom, France Telecom, Cable & Wireless and SingTel who hold independent long distance permits primarily to support their global clients who have businesses in India.

It is believed that the company also plans to service Indian multinationals and is in discussions with domestic IT, ITeS and BPO companies for contracts. It also reportedly plans to establish a data centre in India but has not yet determined whether it will build the data centre on its own or choose a partner.

Telstra also reportedly plans to build international gateways at Chennai and Mumbai where undersea optical fibre cables land. The company also said that it would begin operations in Bangalore, Calcutta, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune.
