
A long with several major regional international telecommunica tions carriers, Telekom Malaysia has signed an MoU to build a 3Gcapable, international undersea cable system linking Southeast Asia with the US. The cable, called the Asia-America Gateway, will link Malaysia to the US via Hong Kong, the Philippines, Guam and Hawaii, with branches in Singapore, Thailand, Brunei and Vietnam. AiTi of Brunei Darussalam, CAT Telecom (Thailand), PLDT (Philippines), REACH (Hong Kong), StarHub (Singapore) and VNPT (Vietnam) have also signed the MoU. The group is still negotiating with potential US partners to handle the landing connection. It may consider expanding to India and Australia later.
Using the latest dense wavelength division multiplexing technologies, the proposed cable system will span 20,000 km. The system will be ready for service by 2008.
