According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), telecom operators are likely to miss the deadline of May 3, 2015 for roll out of full mobile number portability (MNP) across the country due to technical issues. COAI has therefore approached the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to form a committee for coordinating roll-out of full MNP as some network testing and routing issues need to be sorted out in time. The committee will allow coordination between telecom operators to undertake various tests.
The full MNP will allow subscribers to retain their mobile number in any part of the country even when they change their operator or state. At present, MNP allows subscribers to change mobile network while retaining their number in same telecom circle. DoT had set the deadline of May 3, 2015 to start full MNP service and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) amended existing MNP regulations in February 2015.
