The Ministry of Communications and IT has reported that the National e-Transaction Count reached 1.51 billion during January-July 2014. The National e-Transaction Count calculates the number of transactions that take place under national and state level e-governance projects including mission mode projects.
The ministry added that India has experienced a growth in the number of Internet users from 21 million in 2005 to 221 million till June 2014 along with the rise in the number of websites from about 0.17 million to 16 million during the same period.
The increased penetration of internet services in the economy has led to a rise in the number of cyber crimes and security issues. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has reported 62,189 issues related to fishing, scanning, spam, malicious code and website intrusions till May 2014. Moreover, 9,174 Indian websites were hacked by hacker groups all over the world till May 2104. During 2013, 71,780 internet security issues were reported to CERT-In along with 28,481 hacking cases for India.
For the years 2011 and 2012, 13,301 and 22,060 issues were reported to CERT-In respectively. Also, there were a total of 21,699 cases of hacking of Indian websites in 2011 with 27,605 such cases being reported in 2012.
