The Telecom Commission is planning to discuss the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India?s (TRAI) recommendations on broadband services on July 14, 2015. It is also likely to discuss TRAI?s recommendations on allowing virtual network operators (VNO) to operate in the country.

Earlier on April 17, 2015, TRAI had published its recommendations titled ?Delivering Broadband Quickly: What do we need to do??; in which , it had recommended exempting fixed line broadband service from licence fee for at least five years.

Along with this, TRAI had suggested a series of measures to expedite the roll out of high speed networks. Meanwhile, it had also suggested that the government take a decision regarding the spectrum in the 700 MHz band within three months, so that details of its auction can be worked out.

The commission may also consider TRAI?s recommendations released on May 1, 2015 on introducing virtual network operators in the Indian telecom sector. According to the recommendations, a VNO would offer all telecom services permitted under new licences. If accepted, this move would bring about a reduction in marketing and sales cost of telecom companies besides sharing some operational expenses.
