Telecom operators have requested the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), to allow customers to access all critical websites offering government services, ecommerce and digital payments such as the Bhim app, without being charged for data, during the lockdown period.

The telcos had sent letters to the DoT and TRAI a few days back with regard to this and the government is expected to soon take a call on this.

As per industry sources, such a move will benefit the prepaid customers greatly, especially those in the lower tariff order who are monitoring their data usage on a daily basis. Further, the move is unlikely to deliver any additional pressure on a telco’s network since the sites would only be the most critical ones and not necessarily the most popular ones.
