Telecom operators have reportedly sought the government’s support for the rollout of 5G, urging that it should make 5G spectrum available across multiple bands, including premium millimetre waves, at affordable prices.

The issues were put forward by the telcos in a recent meeting held with the parliamentary standing committee on IT headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

In this regard, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) briefed the panel about the country’s preparedness for 5G. Separately, the panel sought clarity from the DoT on ban of China-based telecom vendors, Huawei and ZTE from participating in 5G network contracts.

The Tharoor-led panel initially met the telcos to assess India’s preparedness for 5G and later in the day held a separate review meeting with DoT and the sector regulator.
