Telcos have disconnected 7.3 million mobile connections for failing reverification, after the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) flagged such mobile connections.

DoT has developed a system to detect fraudulent mobile connections taken on fake proof of identity or proof of address documents, and such connections are flagged telecom service providers (TSPs) for reverification.

Further, DoT identified around 19.2 million mobile connections held by approximately 1.6 million subscribers, exceeding the allowable limit for mobile connections per individual across India which resulted in TSPs disconnecting about 6.6 million of these connections, ensuring compliance with the prescribed limits for these subscribers.
