The Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCOE) India and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) – Visvesvaraya Research and Innovation Foundation (VRIF) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a centre of excellence (CoE) in quantum technology, associated 5G/6G technologies and other frontier areas of research and development (R&D). This CoE, headquartered at VTU-VRIF Bangalore, aims to accelerate India’s progress across these key sectors and is part of the 100-day programme.

Further, the CoE is structured using a hub-and-spoke model for innovation, with VTU-VRIF and TCOE India acting as the central hub. By harnessing the intellectual and infrastructural resources of VTU’s 228 affiliated colleges, the CoE will serve as a pivotal facilitator in R&D. This model will enable the CoE to streamline advanced research, promote collaboration, and swiftly scale innovations in quantum technology and related 5G/6G technologies. The hub will feature specialised innovation groups that will recruit top experts from the affiliated colleges.

Furthermore, this CoE aims to foster synergy among key organisations involved in telecom standardisation, including the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), Bharat 6G Alliance, TSDSI, Academic Network, and the Startup Ecosystem. It will empower over 400,000 students, more than 2,000 PhD candidates, and numerous researchers within VTU’s network to enhance R&D efforts and facilitate the commercialisation of groundbreaking innovations.
