The Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCoE) is planning to invite interest from the foreign telecom operators and vendors for partnerships to develop new technology in India. This comes as the domestic telecom operators have shown no interest in the 80 technology innovations made by TCoE and therefore, the entity plans to change its working model. Under the new model, any entity from the telecom industry can collaborate with any of the eight TCoE centres in the country that will help in boosting research activities. In this regard, TCoE has appointed angel investor Vikram Upadhyay as the adviser for establishing partnership with foreign entities.

TCoE was formed in 2009 as a public private partnership initiative between the government, the academia and the telecom industry for research and development to boost the domestic manufacturing industry which lacks fund for research and  developing intellectual property rights. The current innovations of TCOE include voice-based recognition on caller on voice over internet protocols that can prevent fake callers from making calls, technology to ensure high capacity in 4G networks, tool for estimating power consumption in 4G networks, enhancing Wi-Fi coverage area.
