Tamil Nadu government has asked Taiwan-based technology company, Foxconn, to resume manufacturing activity at the three units situated in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. The production at these units was suspended in February 2015, following the exit of Nokia from Chennai in 2014.
The move comes after Foxconn signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to invest $5 billion over five years on a new electronic manufacturing facility.
Foxconn has already started manufacturing and shipping smartphones for Xiaomi and InFocus at its new plant in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The company intends to set up 10 to 12 such manufacturing facilities in the country by 2020. The company plans to manufacture mobile handsets, tablets, TVs, electronic products, batteries and key electronic components, routers, set-top boxes and printers, among other products at these facilities.
