Taiwan Mobile is planning to invest over NT$20 billion in a countrywide optic fibre next-generation network (NGN). This will enable the company to offer convergent telecom services, including cell phone, fixed line and cable television services, on internet protocol networks. Taiwan Mobile will become the second telecom service provider in the country after state-run Chunghwa Telecom, to make the shift to NGNs. To control the costs and construction time on the network, in 2007, Taiwan Mobile signed an exclusive rental contract with Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC) to use the latter’s countrywide optic fibre network. The operator will be paying THSRC NT$300-NT$400 million per year.
