Bharti Airtel’s chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal recently held a meeting with the finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss financial woes surrounding the operators.

Post the meeting, Sunil Mittal pointed that there was immense stress in the telecom sector and the government needed to focus on its sustainability. Further, Mittal stated that the telecom industry is vital to the nation and its digital future. He added that Airtel has already announced plans to pay pending adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues after the Supreme Court declined to grant more time to companies to pay dues.

Later, Mittal also met the telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea Limited’s chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla also had a separate meeting with the finance minister. Earlier, Birla had met telecom secretary Anshu Prakash amid fears that the government may invoke the company’s bank guarantees, as he looked for options to keep the company afloat.
