Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has received approval from the country’s board of investment (BoI) for its initial plan to deploy a Wi-Max broadband network costing $12.8 million. The rollout, to be carried out by its subsidiary, Sky Network, will provide wireless broadband internet services using Wi-Max 802.16e technology to areas including those that lack access to SLT’s ADSL fixed broadband network.

Sky is to provide coverage to the entire country in four implementation phases with operations commencing in March 2010.
