The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) is likely to approach the Supreme Court for seeking an extension in the deadline for the upcoming 2G spectrum auction, say news reports.

Recently, Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) had requested the department for an extension in the deadline, suggesting postponing it to November 2012.

As per the Supreme Court?s order the government is required to complete the spectrum auction by August 31, 2012.

However, DoT is finding it difficult to meet the current deadline and is planning to inform the Supreme Court that the auctioneer will need more time to set up the online system and finalise the auction guidelines. Also, bidders need to be given adequate time to participate in the auction and raise funds for the same.
