Spectranet, a cable and wireless broadband service provider, has acquired the retail internet business of optical fibre cable manufacturer, Sterlite Technologies. However, Sterlite will continue with its core business of laying cables for telecom services in the country.

Headquartered at Pune, Sterlite was offering internet services under its retail internet business to about 150 customers and will now transfer them to Spectranet as proof of concept.

In November 2014, Sterlite had connected about 180,000 households with optical fibres cable in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Chennai and Ahmedabad. Further, it was targeting to expand its presence to 10 cities and connect 1,000,000 households with high speed broadband by 2017. To this end, Sterlite was planning to roll out fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network in Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi and Chandigarh by end-2016.
