According to GfK, smartphone uptake in Thailand has witnessed a significant increase in the last 12 months.

As per the firm, smartphone sales have more than doubled in the period under consideration, from one in every five handsets less two years ago. Smartphone sales now account for 42 per cent of overall sales volume in the last 12 months. This trend emerged in early 2012, with customers spending over $800 million on smartphones in the past year.

The firm adds that though basic feature phones continue to account for the larger proportion of consumers? handsets purchases in the country, demand has been progressively waning, with sale volume declining by over 11 per cent compared to the previous year. Revenue for the segment have accounted for just over 15 per cent of the total handset market, compared to 40 per cent previously.
