Smart Power India, a not for profit entity created by Rockefeller Foundation, is set to provide alternative energy solutions to Indian telecom tower companies. This comes with a view to reduce the diesel consumption of telecom tower companies in India.
It is planning to sign agreements with three Indian tower companies wherein the telecom sites would be powered by the renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, bio-mass as well as on hybrid. Currently, Smart Power is in discussions with Bharti Infratel, Reliance Infratel, Indus Towers as well Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA) for the same.
Smart Power will make use of mini-grid technology for both lighting and other purposes. It will partner with energy service companies, telecom tower operators, investors, non-governmental organisations, and government agencies to cover 1,000 villages in the next three years.
