SK Telecom has reportedly approached China Telecom for a possible joint venture (JV) to start CDMA operations in China. SK Telecom currently owns 6.62 per cent of China Unicom. The Korean company’s move comes ahead of the Chinese government’s long-awaited announcement on the restructuring of its telecom industry.
There have also been speculations that fixed line operator China Telecom will acquire China Unicom’s CDMA network to help it maintain its declining market share as fixed line users continue to switch to the mobile platform offered by China Mobile.
