S Somanath, chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has urged the industry to put significant investment in the space sector to build rockets and allied systems for India to become a space power by 2047.

He expressed concern over the elusive investments in the upstream sector, including launch vehicles, hardware and software for ground-based stations, telemetry, tracking, and command stations. Somanath also emphasised the need to encourage the next generation of leaders to enter the sector and create a vibrant activity.

Meanwhile, he acknowledged the risks involved in the space sector, such as developing complex systems over a longer period, and called for the creation of leading space companies in India, and not just service-providing companies.
