The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir administration, seeking their reply on a petition that has sought the restoration of 4G services in the union territory in view of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.

The petition also alleges that the government’s action was in violation of Article 14 (right to equality), Article 19 (freedom of speech) and Article 21 (right to life) of the Indian Constitution.

The petition also highlighted that 2G services were outdated and provision of 4G services would enable better and faster flow of information to the citizens, thus enabling them to deal with Covid-19 pandemic in a more efficient manner. This is all the more important given that the total number of cases in Jammu and Kashmir has already reached 33, with two reported deaths.
