The Supreme Court has reserved its order on a batch of petitions seeking restoration of 4G internet services in Jammu and Kashmir. As per these petitions, the 2G service available in the union territory is not suitable for sustaining the various education and business activities amid the ongoing coronavirus-induced lockdown.
The SC bench has said that it is taking into consideration all the issues in the matter and that it does not require any additional material in the case.
The lawyers representing the government in this matter have stated that restrictions of internet speed are required for national security. Meanwhile, the lawyers representing the petitioners have emphasised that the COVID-19 situation in J&K has worsened. Moreover, they have also informed the court that lack of 4G internet in UT is creating problems for the doctors as they are not able access necessary information about coronavirus treatment due to slow internet speeds.
