The Supreme Court has extended Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) chairperson’s tenure, which is scheduled to end on April 20, 2020, by three months. Further, it has questioned the Centre as to why the members of the tribunal had not been appointed since October 2019.

Emphasising on the fact that the tribunals function as an alternative to judicial system, the SC bench questioned the Solicitor General as to how the TDSAT would function without sitting members since only the chairperson is there and his tenure would have also come to an end on April 20, 2020.

To this end, the Solicitor General has informed the SC bench that he would take instructions from the government on the issue of appointments in TDSAT.

SC has asked the Centre to expedite the appointment process for members of the tribunal and will hold the next hearing regarding this in the first week of May 2020.
