As vice-president of network implementation, global services at Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN), Sanjay Malik has his plate full. His responsibilities include enhancing the company?s product portfolio and developing its global network implementation business. ?Building a winning global team and achieving customer satisfaction are also core aspects of my current profile,? he says.
Malik?s career has been largely telecom centric, having worked in this space for over two decades. Prior to his current role, he served as head of the Bharti Airtel Customer Business Team at NSN.
In each of his former stints, he focused on engaging with and empowering his teams with the right amount of control. ?I am participative, consensual and decisive in my approach to leadership,? he says.
So, which project does he consider his most memorable? ?My stint as head of the Bharti global business for NSN was an exciting time,? he recollects. ?During that assignment, I helped develop a mutually beneficial relationship between Bharti Airtel and NSN, as I supported Bharti in improving the customer experience. This was achieved by deploying a customer experience management solution that offered daily insights on various state-of-the-art technologies that could be used to improve network quality. Bharti Airtel is one of NSN?s most vital customers globally.?
From an overall industry perspective, he comments that the telecom sector is likely to witness a busy time in terms of technology deployment. ?While 3G as a medium will be explored to its fullest, more advanced technologies like long term evolution and 5G will take the world by storm,? he observes.
From an operator?s perspective, he says that the global data explosion requires operators to be prepared to cater to the requirement for efficient management and higher quality services. ?Network partners will have to support service providers in meeting the requirements for this data growth. This will go a long way in enhancing the end-user experience.?
The sector will require a strong focus on network quality improvements in metro cities, with a shift from the management of networks to customer management, Malik believes. Other areas of focus will include spectrum optimisation, spectrum re-farming and data monetisation.
And how does he spend his time outside of work? ?I enjoy a game of tennis as well as listening to Hindi music,? Malik responds.
