According to the research firm Canalys Analyst, Samsung and Micromax led the Indian smartphone market in the second quarter of 2013.

Other players featuring in the top five players include Karbonn Mobiles, Sony and Nokia. Based on the number of smartphones shipped during the second quarter of 2013, smartphone manufacturers such as Apple, BlackBerry, LG, HTC, Huawei, Spice and Lenovo do not make it to the list of the top five smartphone manufacturers.

The research firm points out that for the period under review, smartphone shipments in India stood at 9 million registering a growth of 129 per cent. In comparison, smartphone shipments in countries such as U.K, Japan, US and China stood at 7.4 million, 8.6 million, 32.9 million and 88.1 million, respectively.

Canalys Analyst states that over the years, Samsung has invested heavily in brand and its distribution network in the country and it has a distinct advantage over its competitors. It adds that the Indian market is in transition, moving from feature phones to smartphones. It offers huge business potential to mobile phone manufacturers as millions of users are yet to upgrade their feature phones.

Further, domestic mobile phone makers such as Micromax and Karbonn Mobiles are capitalising on the demand for feature phones and are better positioned to respond to the demands of domestic customers.
