Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) has launched its broadband wireless access services under the brand ‘Jionet’ in Kolkata. The service launched in Park Street, Kolkata can be initially for free. The company will soon extend the services to adjoining areas like Loudon Street, Camac Street, Mirza Ghalib Street and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road will also be covered. The Gariahat-Gol Park area is set to be the city’s second Wi-Fi hotspot. All infrastructural facilities are in place for the second phase of network rollout.
This comes as the first initiative in turning Kolkata into a Wi-Fi enabled city. RJIL has already laid cables along a 500-km stretch of the city. While the major part of Kolkata has been covered, work is in progress to bring the entire service area under its 4G network coverage. RJIL has stated that it will carry out a gradual rollout in the rest of Kolkata by early 2016.
