The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has refused to guarantee that Canadian handset maker Research In Motion?s (RIM) services would not be banned in the country. This took place after the company requested for an extension of 18-24 months to provide a solution for interception of its enterprise mail system.
Prior to this, RIM was granted time until 31 January, 2011, to provide a solution for lawful interception of contents sent or received on its BlackBerry devices.
The DoT had stated that creating infrastructure for BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES)-related services in the country may not only make the BES safer in terms of security but may also serve the company?s commercial interests.
Thus, the DoT suggested that RIM create infrastructure for its BES in India in as short a time as possible. Meanwhile, RIM informed DoT that interception and monitoring is possible at the BES and that RIM infrastructure in Canada and England is a router that does not store content but routes the content to the desired destination.
