Reliance Jio has reportedly raised concerns over the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) rationale behind halting the spectrum auction repeatedly. Further, the telco has demanded that the sale of airwaves be held at the earliest so as to meet the data services needs of the country.
Reliance Jio is believed to have written a letter regarding this to the DoT on September 28, 2020.
Spectrum auctions were held every year following the Supreme Court order in the 2G case in 2012 and the last was held in the year 2016.
In its letter, Jio stated that allocation of sufficient spectrum is necessary to achieve sustainable and orderly growth of the sector, to meet the national objectives and for provision of quality broadband for all.
According to Jio, in the last four years, since the last auction, there has been an exponential increase in traffic and data consumption has grown by almost 50 times. That said, it’s imperative that all available spectrum should be immediately auctioned.
